BP Group – Process &
Performance News – June 2009
A
periodic update for all things process
Dear Colleague,
June is bursting our all over :-)
It traditionally gets quieter in June however this year is very different.
The rapid growth in the BP Groups Linked presence continues, there have been more than 30 new discussions, and we have several new case studies and downloads from the world of Outside-in BPM.
We have an analysis of those companies practising Outside-in (and there's a surprise or two in there) and then a new development (courtesy of Google) that has the promise to transform our process world completely.
So have a browse, cherry pick the good stuff, come on down to the discussions and enjoy the busiest June ever.

What Impact do you find using a BPMS system has on end to end process time? Richard Frost
Most complex business processes will benefit from examination, modelling, simplification and removal of bottlenecks and redundant steps.
Whilst BPM software can be of use to model and identify issues and improvements, many of the necessary changes can be implemented by business management teams without the need to deploy any automation or IT based process management. ...

Why is Customer Experience so different to Customer Expectation?
David Mottershead
Say you've identified an organisation that needs a little BPM, what is the message that gets people excited the most? Is it a crown, the triple crown, or something else? Is every organisation the same or does it depend on the type of organisation, the industry, the size of the organisation or who you speak to?

Why does the US appear to be lagging in process again?
Dick Lee
As a U.S. process person, I perceive that process sophistication here is again lagging behind what's happening elsewhere, particularly in the U.K. and on the Continent. Specifically, we appear to be more fixated on Lean and Six Sigma and less willing to try new approaches. We don't even appear to be practicing these two traditional approaches as rigorously as others. And we seem to lack the passion for process that's so abundant in other quarters.
And we have a history of falling behind...

What are the top Outside-in Companies doing?
Steve Towers
After some pressure we 'open' the list of companies and people who are exemplary outside-inners. Those people who can give us all a better understanding of the new outside-in mindset oriented to achieving Successful Customer Outcomes.
If you have people and places you wish to name please contribute...

Is there value in documenting processes if you're going to change them?
Stan Kirkwood
I had a conversation with several executives who wish to document hundreds of processes before they get rid of them when they implement a new ERP system. I have spent many years redesigning processes and can't think of any real value in them doing what they plan on doing. They will spend tens of thousands of dollars and will throw away the results. Few, if any, of these processes are considered critical. (66 comments)

The Wave... are you ready to catch it?
Steve Towers
If you lived in Sydney, enjoyed surfing and worked for Google then what would you call the next product that could change the world forever? Yes that's right, Wave. It's being readied for launch in a few weeks so start waxing those boards.

New Presentations & Downloads
An interesting item featuring the transformation underway at American Airlines provoked considerable response about:
(a) what are others doing to go 'outside-in' i.e. 4th wave BPM, and
(b) what correlation exists between Outside-in and business success.
Let's answer both questions with a couple of recent case studies/presentations from Toyota and Virgin Mobile, then a piece of research (just completed) on the Top 15 companies in terms of brand value, and their aspirations regarding 4th wave BPM.
